St Mary's Choir

St. Mary's choir is a robed four-part choir of children and adults. We sing in a great variety of musical styles, ancient and modern.

Here are 8 reasons why you might wish to join:

1. Fun and friendship

The choir is like a club. It is a chance to make new friends and share an activity with old friends. Choir practice is light-hearted and good fun while learning a life long skill. We have parties and picnics from time to time.

2. Musical Education

St. Mary's Choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) and follows its training scheme. Junior and senior choristers progress through the scheme and are rewarded with medals and coloured ribbons. This helps develop many valuable musical skills and also responsibility and leadership skills.

3. Achievement

New choristers work up from probationer, junior chorister, to senior chorister, and maybe even Head Chorister. The RSCM offers special awards for those who become more advanced.

4. Commitment

The Choir practices each Thursday evening and supports the 10 a.m. service on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th  and 5th Sundays of the month.

5. Big occasions

We sing at special services and concerts at Easter and Christmas and at weddings.

6. Money

The choristers are paid for weddings and occasional special services.

7. The Church

The choir is a most valuable part of the life and worship of the church. Weddings are good fun and support the community.

8. A chance to learn about the organ and use your keyboard skills.

During the summer holidays there is a chance to have an organ lesson if you already play the piano and maybe to accompany the choir at practices. There may also be the chance of learning to conduct.

How do I join?

No auditions are required to join. Just come along to a few choir practices and try us out. Boys and girls, men and women are all welcome. The junior choristers begin at about 8 years old.

We would particularly love to have a couple more lady sopranos in the choir. Yoiu don't need to be able to read music;  enthusiam and the ability to hold a tune are all that is needed!

Choir Practice

The choir meets on Thursdays.

Junior Choristers: 6 -7.30 p.m.

Adults: 6.30-7.30 p.m.
