St Mary's Choir

St. Mary’s Church Choir – A New Era!

St. Mary’s Church Choir is moving forward into a new and exciting phase in its long history.

We are recruiting for a new children’s choir.

This will be a training choir that will provide a solid musical education using resources from the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). The children will work through the ‘Voice for Life’ scheme run and supported by the RSCM and will receive a structured musical training.

They will learn to read music, to sight sing, vocal training and be exposed to a large range of music and musical styles from 16th century to the present day.

At each stage of the children’s progress there will be achievement medals and ribbons that are sourced from the RSCM. These are beautiful and worth keeping for life.

The higher awards have recognised points that can be accumulated towards the university points scheme.

There will be trips from time to time to join with other children’s choirs for extra training, often from a member of the RSCM. These usually end in a concert or service that can be attended by family and friends. Even residential courses are available.

Anyone who reaches grade 4 or 5 on the piano can have some free organ lessons from me if they wish.

The children will be required to attend the church at 10.00 a.m. for approximately 1 hour 15 minutes on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and occasional 5th Sundays of the month. The 1st Sunday is time off!  The choir will provide all the music for the service and aim to sing a different anthem each week! Time out for holidays etc. is of course fine. Just let me know.

If the children sing at weddings, they will be paid. Currently this is £5 each.

The choir will be a club. We will have fun! We will have occasional parties or picnics. Singing in this kind of choir where everyone is given opportunities to develop skills is very good for building self confidence, which then filters into other aspects of life.

The club will be entirely free!

The new scheme will begin on Thursday 27th September.

The format of the practice will be:

5.50 p.m. Beginning of the choir practice.

6.20 p.m. Refreshments

6.30 p.m. Join in with the adult choir

7.00 p.m. Youngest members may leave

7.30 p.m. End of choir practice for all.

I will not be auditioning anyone. All you need is a wish to have fun singing, improve your skills and make friends.

There will be a probation period of three practices before joining the Sunday service. The choir is robed. Medals and ribbons are worn on Sundays.

The Head Chorister and the Deputy Head Chorister, both very experienced choristers with beautiful voices, will help us at the choir practice.

I am a professional musician with many years experience of teaching music to all ages and at all levels right up to university and music college entry.

It is my pleasure to offer my skills more widely to the children of the village. I know we will have a splendid time.

Please contact me if you are interested or wish to have any further information or have questions.
